seven jars of figs

contains the fruit of his trees and the preserving of the queen and one of which contains at least a syrup which will be offered somehow, somewhere on a brisket and slaw soft taco. I am only attempting to recreate the legend he created when describing the brisket bbq taco from Pig and Pint in Jackson.

Today I am grateful for dinner plans and the imagining of what could be. One day I'm going to make that trip and taste what all the fuss is about at that place.

7 solid hours of sleep

plenty of movement but no organized exercise, proper hydration, vitamin D, fresh cherries and broccoli and peppers and pecans and a plate full of seared chicken and yes I also ate the crispy cheese crackers and had an extra cup of coffee. Let's just say the scales are dusty and I got some quarters at the end of the week.

My next read is shamefully on it's way,  but yes, I will also be ordering McCarthy's The Crossing. He doesn't write. He creates like that cover of Tamia from Childish Gambino or maybe it is that he plays strings like Kelly Joe Phelps or John Butler, but yes. McCarthy is a king.

I am grateful for how that man narrates though I never want to hear him speak.

 Listen, me.

Today I am grateful for another opportunity to pick up my camera and play.

early energy, late afternoon coma

Sixty-four ounces of water is not enough and weekend craziness hits harder as one may age.

Felt my age today.

Too much sugar, salt and fat. Biscuits even. So much bacon.

Today I am grateful for the boy's story, the wiggle her nose video, help and a nap wherein I may still not be back.

complaint

Page 263 and four months later I don't want it to end. Cormac McCarthy's All the Pretty Horses is not enough pages.

Today I am grateful for the book, all the help in the kitchen and the late afternoon swim.

Sublime Spectacle in Subpar Parks (page 37)

Today I am grateful for groceries and conversations with kids about trips to parks.

And a portfolio.

perfect end to a day and a week

I told the girls in the back, "Wave at that truck," as I was passing by and you were coming down the drive.

They didn't say a word. So I wondered, did they.

Today I am grateful for shrimp and grits, tables and chairs, friends and family, the fan at Cozette's and a wave. Your music. Dang.

always on the verge

 Very well could be something.

Today I am grateful for a broom, a nap, aching muscles, and a hot shower. And the job! I am grateful she accepted my offer.

finding ways to charge

Today I am grateful for interest, for word of mouth, for the whole process of I bring this and you bring that, for the ability to name my price and for someone to say, "Yeah. I think what you do could be worth that."

She is a mobile personal trainer.

Today I am grateful to hear him smile.

subpar book review

America's Most Extraordinary National Parks And Their Least Impressed Visitors, the hardcovers delivered by the kind people who bring me my messages, holds like a third grade textbook if you went to third grade in 1978.  It looks like one of those books, too. I already like it.

Today I am grateful for a book to share with the kids.

t-shirt give away

Today I am grateful for the potential of another Memphis gig, a local performance by some of my favorite  little people and the promise that another week could bring.

the take care of yourself philosophy

My friend Adam. I did it this week. My friend Adam says and then whatever I attribute to my now Adam belief but I do remember. And that was the thing about Adam. He was already legendary.

solving sudoku, competing in minesweeper, playing chess with the kid and this

Today I am grateful for people who I still laugh with and those I see now and think those eyes, that smirk, that guy is brilliant.

He'd wave his hand over his head and then point, "I got this to take care of."

I said what I said

Music and Joe Bob watermelon and sunlight and a late afternoon swim and shrimp and grits from Cozette's. Yes, grateful. That's right.

cool mornings, warm evenings

It's as if the clouds are angry or at least hungry.

Today I am grateful for a weekend eve, the sounds those clouds create and her reaction to Easy Cheese on a Ritz cracker.

monetize for further incentive

I think Huberman is for the napping, and he is a smart guy. So there's that.

Today I am grateful for a long nap and an entry fee.

50K, me. Train now. Stop trying. Go

disgusting - train harder

We were there early and her phone suggested a Mocha Mugs only three point nine miles away and you can't purchase the minimal amount of java chocolate chip. You have to get the big one and get a cookie because this is an early celebration of a test, those photos and this year.

So then, of course, dinner here.

Today I am grateful for the means and opportunity to splurge and love till I feel disgusting guilt because those crab claws, that sweet tea, the oysters, the shrimp and my oh my bread pudding seriously.

book (shrouded her figure away in that wild summer landscape: real horse, real rider, real land and sky and yet a dream withal. (yes, Mr. McCarthy. yes.))

full tank of gas

letting the hum drown out the noise, we won't even have to say

Today I am grateful for her and him and sitting at the desk reading.

the best dive was a nine point seven five

Today I am grateful for a new sign at the bottom of the hill, eleven dinners served in a take-out style of girls getting after it, problem solving by people who love each other, clear fingernail polish and a diving contest I just knew I'd win.

some days

The internet suggests I apply lemon juice to my skin in order to get rid of the chiggers, but it also says that it is not good to put lemon juice on my skin.

Today I am grateful for forgiveness and anyone with some purple dual film they're willing to share.

Thursday, July 8, 2021

save me a seat

I just need to sit on the bench at the gas station and talk about how this world is crazy and they ain't gone get our cars but at least now we know who they is.

Today I am grateful for road trips and back roads and beaches and mountains and the podcast episode he sent. Road trip music?

tonight's rule

I can eat the butter if I put it on the salmon.

Today I am grateful for 99 ounces of clean drinking water, great news in the meeting, salmon and the confidence training in the rain brings.

Tuesday, July 6, 2021

bring cherries, do sit ups, lemon pie coming

Today I am grateful for a beautiful yard and that other people like chocolate covered pecans and dill pickle flavored peanuts and a thick, warm slice of extra sharp cheddar cheese on a Ritz. Because then I can buy it for them and just eat some of their stuff.

Somewhere it has to say that you can trade those little Hershey's dark chocolate with almond - cool from the refrigerator - for an extra thirty minutes of exercise.

ten hour time limit - 4 miles then break for 5 minutes more than halfway through our first loop

It was hot which led to some pretty top notch sweating with the overall crying decibel to be about 220. I'm saying we were only four miles in but there was this moment when she began singing as she walked and it wasn't some suffering ballad. It was sweet relief.

Her official ultra trek statement is, "I just want to be at the finish line."

Today I am grateful for a well marked trail. There's some hills, and it wasn't easy but we got more than halfway to seeing what I will be doing four times that day.

starting with one of the four, or initial fears

There's going to be a midday heat. We'll begin at 6:30 in the morning.

30.0686 miles.

26.2 took me eight and a half hours. For most it's three.

I need to feel the hills, walk the course. The loop is 7.78 miles.

I don't know that Goggins would approve of me wondering what the maximum time allowance is, but I am grateful for the opportunity to work through a math problem and get some much needed sunshine.

day one - hills per hour baseline

He said to tell her, "Mama is fine. Daddy glued her old shoes."

Today I am grateful for his smile, how Mama loved the new shoes, corn, a signed on agreement, rocking with Heddy and pork chops with Deacon.

And the hill. I'm grateful for the hill, too.

older now

Today I am grateful for rocking chairs and water features and a history.

We're 245 this weekend! (using America's birthday as an excuse)

Today I am grateful for a list of exercises that the only "in person" personal trainer I've ever had gave me. I am grateful for an early afternoon, a visit from the girls and plans for the morning. I am already grateful for tomorrow night's guacamole, Heddy, Sunday's Deacon and all the people those two dogs have wrapped around their paws.

Training begins Sunday evening. 68 days before the 50K. (Get serious, me. Control your breathing.)

The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch

You say, "Get uncomfortable."

I may have mentioned the comfort of macaroni and cheese.

Today I am grateful for the quiet, the thought, the movie and the book.
